  2.    After using his Radio ShackO PRO-34 portable scanner  for
  3.    a  few months, Ron Smithberg, a radio hobbyist in Joliet,
  4.    was hampered by a "wandering birdie."  Ron's scanner  was
  5.    hearing  itself on a few frequencies in the VHF-Hi range,
  6.    but the birdie disappeared when he tilted  the  radio  or
  7.    squeezed  the  case.   There had been no problem when the
  8.    scanner was purchased initially.

  10.    I suggested that a ground connection or a  circuit  board
  11.    in  his  PRO-34  might be loose.  The thin PRO-34 plastic
  12.    case feels chintzy, and can flex easily by applying  just
  13.    a  gentle  squeeze.  After prolonged use, the case motion
  14.    can loosen screws which were once tight.

  16.    Ron disassembled his PRO-34.  He unfastened  the  helical
  17.    antenna,  knobs,  and  rear screws, then gingerly removed
  18.    the plastic case.  After Ron tightened a PhillipsO  screw
  19.    holding  the  Logic  Board  to the front of the case, the
  20.    birdie disappeared forever!

  22.    The operation took a steady  hand.   Although  he  didn't
  23.    have  to remove any boards, Ron warned that accessing the
  24.    offending screw was a challenge.  He used  a  very  small
  25.    Phillips  screwdriver,  positioned  through  a  hole in a
  26.    shield partition.
